DIVIDE AND CONQUER

Beware of the Mega Merge Request Madness

Large merge requests are impossible to review thoroughly — they cause context overload, review fatigue, and rubber-stamp approvals.

Splitting MRs by concern (refactor vs. feature vs. dependency) leads to faster, safer, and higher-quality code reviews. Small MRs deliver value continuously, reduce breakage risk, and keep branches close to main.

Ship Small. Ship Often. Ship Safe.

SET BOUNDARIES - FIND PEACE

preview-slide-input-validation

The web works very easy right?

Input -> Process -> Output

If your Input has already an invalid state, processing and outputting data will be unpredictable.

This is why setting boundaries by input validation as strict as possible matters.

You can't test everything, but you should monitor it

We had an incident which did occur in our warehouse at KRUU. From one day to the next, we had issues that the download of the photos did not finish in time. It sometimes took more than 1 hour.

After several hours of debugging and investigation, we found out that we had a network issue. After aggregating the data - which took some time - we found out that this problem did already exist for 2 years. We did not notice because we did not have a monitoring for this, and we did not send out that many photo booths in that time because of Covid-19.

This was the day we decided we need monitoring for these metrics - so we set up OpenSearch, pushed in the metrics including the old one and added alerts, so we get noticed in time. By this, we will recognize very early and can take action to get rid of problems.

preview-slide-talk-jimflow
